There's a security vulnerability in the secure boot feature of modern computers. While the patch for this 0-day was already released, it won't be enabled by default until Q1 2024. That's a long time to wait for a fix. In theory you can probably enable this fix sooner than that, but most people aren't even going to be aware of it, so most of the vulnerable computer population will remain vulnerable for basically a year, giving attackers ample opportunity to take advantage of it.

It's not just the games themselves. Everything is slower to respond on that one day of the month. Even in the background, updates still interfere with what you're doing. It's a shame that keeping up to date slows everything down.

The thing about windows updates is that it's never done. There will always be more to fix.

Never mind the annoyance at seeing these new binaries popping up at regular intervals, there's also the issue of investigative fatigue and the diminishing value skepticism has when most of the new binaries your security software alerts you to are just additional Microsoft detritus that came in on the most recent Windows Update.

The more I think about it, the more it seems like each incarnation of Windows Update has mirrored some sort of bad relationship behaviour. You've got the overly persistent mode of operation (above) we all became familiar with over the years. Then with Windows 10 it stopped asking for consent and basically didn't give you a choice anymore. Finally, with Windows 11 it will reportedly withhold what you need and leave you vulnerable.

Is Microsoft unable to model their update process after a healthy human relationship, or do they just not know what one looks like?

I'm not sure if Microsoft realizes how unpopular Windows Updates are, but threatening to withhold them isn't going to get them the response they want. If anything some people are going to avoid upgrading their hardware just so they can have an unobtrusive computing experience.

If the forced updates only contained security patches, that would be one thing, but that's not how Windows update works. They change all kinds of things that have nothing to do with security and it's not unheard of for the system to be worse afterwards.

Microsoft is essentially burning whatever trust people had in updates.

The worst time for updates is when you're trying to turn off your computer (because you don't have time for that, you need to go). The second worst time for updates is when you start up the computer (because you don't have time for that, you're trying to do something, maybe even work). Updates wouldn't be nearly as difficult to get applied if you could find a time to do them what didn't interfere with what the user is trying to do.

As important as security updates are, if they keep being applied in an obnoxious fashion people are eventually going to find a way to block them.

Now, I'm not saying they shouldn't have released a patch for XP. If they think XP needs a patch then by all means patch away. All I'm saying is they should pick a position - either the OS is dead or it isn't. Don't pretend you don't support it if you're going to continue releasing patches for it.
