Department of Pearl Clutching

from here and here

Of course the FBI is raising a stink about Facebook switching to end to end encryption. And of course they're going to say they're worried about kids. Here's an idea - if the children really are their only concern, why not simply ask tech companies to disallow encryption when communicating with children? It's not a hard sell to suggest that kids require supervision. Problem solved, if that is in fact the real problem. I doubt it is, however.

Beg for your rights

from here and here

You shouldn't need to ask permission to have privacy. The very idea is offensive. So of course that's what Facebook is going to spend millions pursuing in court.

That's gonna be a no from me

from here and here

I've come to expect this kind of data sharing shenanigans from websites, but from brick-and-mortar stores? Why? Don't they save enough money by not printing a physical receipt to more than pay for the service of emailing the receipt?

Gotta pay the privacy tax

from here and here (image source)

If ever there was an organization that a privacy tax would be paid to or filed with, Facebook would be the one. Of course, I don't mean a tax paid for the benefit of privacy - rather your privacy itself is the currency this tax is paid with.

Presumably H&R Block, TaxAct, and TaxSlayer were sending your tax data to Meta in addition to sending it to the government, rather than in place of sending it to the government. I'd hate to think they filing with the wrong entity.

When they opt out of your opt out

from here and here

In a move that surprises exactly no one, Facebook has apparently decided that they don't have to follow the explicitly stated wishes of it's users. Their users are starting to sue them over it. That's right, it's not just complaining, it's lawsuits (if we're lucky they'll become class action lawsuits)

How'd you like a reminder of your younger, cringier self

from here and here

And the cringey reminders are the best case scenario. There are probably worse memories stored in your Facebook account, and almost no one ever bothers to get rid of that stuff.

Younger people seem to have the good sense not to use Facebook in the first place, though. They've probably seen what it's like when people with numerous years of history on Facebook get haunted by the most painful or embarrassing moments of their past.

A Facebook Challenger Appears

from here and here

It's hard to believe anyone could give Facebook a run for their money, but it sounds like Oracle is doing just that. Not in the context of social networking, however, but rather in the context of global surveillance.

It's difficult to imagine why Oracle would be interested in my political views and physical location, but I suppose those are details an authoritarian regime could use about it's citizens.

But it's "for your security"

from here and here

Twitter and Facebook have both been caught misusing the 2FA details for ad targeting and they are probably not alone.

There are many ways that online sites could have chosen to implement two factor authentication. It stretches credulity to think that they just happened by accident to choose the one that benefits their advertising businesses.

No, I think any security benefits were actually a secondary concern and that's why the online world has settled on a technology that is actually inferior from a security perspective.

Just think of it as a kind of corporate engagement

Of course they're spying on you. That's not even a question anymore. It's how their targeted advertising works.

What do you do if you're both?

from here and here

"Delete your account" is the best answer I've heard so far. If only it was that simple.

Zuck on a Truck

Watch on YouTube

When it comes to figures that have come to symbolize invasion of privacy, Mark Zuckerberg definitely give the Elf on the Shelf a run for it's money. The similarity is amazing too, their both so lifelike.

These are our users, get your own

from here and here

You've got to figure that when Facebook tries to defend users against spying by cops it isn't for the benefit of the users. They spy on those same users, so it's no principled endeavor. In all likelihood they're just trying to stop less capable spies from scaring the users away from the platform.

The Old Switcheroo

from here and here

If it sounds like Mark Zuckerberg is pulling a fast one by claiming Facebook won't use face recognition anymore but under their new name they will continue to use it, then you are not alone. It seems a bit like a bait and switch scam.

And everybody elses

from here

I actually have zero difficulty imagining Mark Zuckerberg as a helicopter parent. Just look at how much his company spies on complete strangers. So the idea that Facebook wanted to target children around the same age as Zuckerberg's oldest makes it difficult not to see a possible connection between the two.

"Suspicion", you're doing it wrong!

from here and here

It appears that Facebook Marketplace is a trash fire with too many scams and too little oversight. Banning people who volunteer their time and effort to help is just the tip of the iceberg.

Maybe this will appease the BGP gods

from here and here (image source)

After the global outage on Monday, I'm sure there's a lot more prayers and crossing fingers going on at Facebook these days. They do not want a repeat performance.

Single Point Of Faceb^H^H^H^H^H Failure

from here

I think it's safe to say that when even the doors are affected by your networking mishap, it's time to rethink having everything go through the same servers.

How Zuckerberg will make VR the future of Facebook

from here

Maybe I'm crazy, but this kind of dark pattern in their support seems like just the kind of thing Zuckerberg would pull to drive adoption among those who would otherwise not be interested in virtual reality, and thereby aid in bringing Zuckerberg's VR plans for Facebook to fruition. All they have to do is gradually disable people's accounts and wait for them to "migrate" to Oculus.

Dragging us down to their level

from here

Leave it to one of the most invasive companies on the planet to find a way to normalize being invasive. Surveillance isn't bad if everyone is doing it, right?
