Bleed-only memory

from here and here (image source)

Making shivs out of computer memory is definitely an unusual choice. I suppose they could also make a garrote out of a USB cable, or shuriken out of DVDs.

But as far as cyberweapons go, these are as close to satisfying the criteria as anything else.

Who'll scoop out the "Privacy Sandbox"?

from here and here

It appears that, under Google's new scheme, while you browse you're going to be added to various "interest groups" and then be shown ads based on those groups, and it'll up to you to go in and clear out/block the groups you don't want.

In other words, the "interest groups" are the turds in the privacy kitty litter and you may well find that the job of cleaning it out never really ends.

In email roulette, always bet on spam

from here and here

I'm probably an outlier in the fact that I never receive actual spam in my Gmail account, but I do get spam false positives just like everybody else. I wish they'd make it easier to check my spam folder since legit email ends up there so often.

Extra fees in 3...2...1...

from here and here

I have a feeling VPNs are going to take a hit because of this new Netflix policy. It may only be rolled out to a few countries right now, but as soon as it becomes widespread it's going to present VPNs with a problem. It directly attacks location shifting, which is one of, if not THE main use case for VPNs. People aren't going to want to pay as much for VPNs if there are going to be additional fees from other services in response to using a VPN.

You might be thinking that VPNs will still be necessary for security/privacy, but you don't really gain much in those areas now that the majority of websites use HTTPS. VPN companies may still be able to sell their services on this use case, but then they'll just be peddling snake-oil.

As if they could catch a real bomb

found on Imgur

With their 95% failure rate, I suspect confiscating water bottles at TSA checkpoints does more to drive the sale of bottled water in the shops beyond the checkpoints than it does to stop terrorism. I wonder if anyone has looked for a money trail there.

Master keys, shitty locks, and biometrics

from here and here

Forgive me for making a reference to a "theory" that is usually used to justify a sexual double standard, but I think in the case of fingerprint biometrics being fooled by fake fingerprints we're looking at something that fits the shitty lock classification much more closely.

Awareness without knowledge

found on Meme.XYZ

The down side of making sure everyone has heard of viruses without telling them how to recognize one is that people start to think everything is a virus.
