Stolen And Purchased

from here and here

I'm kind of surprised that SAP's first clue they had a data breach was when they purchased their own hard drive off of Ebay. But if people can just waltz out of their data center with hard drives in their pockets or something then I guess I shouldn't be surprised after all.

The unspoken cost of porch piracy

found on eBaum's World

This also demonstrates the importance of continuity planning. Don't wait until you run out of an important resource before you buy more. Instead order more long enough ahead of running out so that you always have some in reserve in case of emergencies like this.

Taking Pwn2Own on the road

from here and here

Hacking a car through it's headlights is certainly a novel approach to automotive theft. Learning that the same thing could also be accomplished in other areas (even punching a hole in the side and grabbing wires inside) make it clear that this is going to take some doing to fix.

Never underestimate your adversary

Don't worry about these two jail birds. There will be plenty to eat where they're going. Just make sure you make it harder for them to get back in because they were released.

Gives new meaning to the term "auto theft"

from here and here

Of course there are a number of other scenarios one can imagine with autonomous vehicles operating against the wishes of their owners, and a few of them come from the mind of Stephen King. However, given how car thieves have already adopted technological approaches to stealing cars, I have no doubt this will be one of the first ways crooks exploit this new technology.

Thieves exploiting major vulnerability to steal Dodge Ram trucks

Watch on YouTube

This news report makes an excellent point. Vehicles are now computers on wheels, and need the same kind of effort to protect that more traditional computers do. Something to keep in mind when you're choosing your next vehicle.

Doing crimes and having a blast

from here and here

I guess not everyone knows quite how flammable gasoline is, and somebody found out the hard way while doing something they ought not to have done. I wonder if he still hade his eyebrows when the police caught up with him.

The Bitcoin Kid

Watch on YouTube

Imagine pulling off one of the biggest bitcoin heists and seemingly getting away with it with little more than a slap on the wrist. I wonder who that kid was and if he wound up working in the security industry - or if he even needs to work at all anymore.

Catch me if you ca... No, not like that!

from here and here

So not only can blockchain transactions be traced, but since the blockchain is forever, even things from a decade ago can be tracked down.

If only attribution was always this easy (and satisfying)

Watch on YouTube

Attackers do sometimes leave themselves open to counter-attack, but not nearly often enough, and usually not in nearly as satisfying a way as this. That thief has learned a very painful lesson.

Shhh... Be vewy, vewy quiet

from here and here

It's been a long time coming but Amazon Prime Air is finally coming to a backyard near some folks in Lockeford, California. Sure there are already other drone delivery pilot programs, but I'm not sure they'll be able to hold a candle to the amount of online retail business Amazon does. So I think we'll have to wait for Amazon's service to take off before we see a major shift in the modus operandi of porch pirates. Will we start calling them prime pirates? Who knows, but taking out a drone before it gets anywhere near someone's house seems like a win for thieves (especially when you see what they've done to shipping trains), so I have no doubt that it's going to become open season on delivery drones.

Guess they'll just have to steal more

from here and here

I can't imagine Kim Jung Un is very happy that all that cryptocurrency his country stole has now dropped significantly in value. On the bright side, though, at least they didn't have to actually work (or mine) for it.

The lowest tech ATM robbery

Watch on YouTube

He's got no heavy machinery, no vehicle of his own, no apparent tools of any kind. It seems like he just unplugged it and started dragging it away. I honestly would have thought ATMs would be heavy enough that you couldn't do that. I certainly have my doubts that he would have been able to hoist it up into the bus. Not without help, at aleast.

The Emergency 911 Getaway Plan

found on Reddit

There's more details in the comments on Reddit if you need to know more about the story. Of course the plan was doomed to fail. If she was trying to avoid arrest, I'm not sure why she didn't just put the items back when she realized they were on to her. There wouldn't have been anything to charge her with if she returned the items before trying to leave. Some crooks aren't very bright, I guess.

Be on the lookout for a building

from here and here (image source)

Stealing an entire building certainly seems like a new twist on property theft. What are you supposed to do to prevent it? Locking your doors and windows won't do anything. Are you supposed to get a giant bicycle lock and chain the cabin to a tree?

Let's review the tape

from here

Surveillance cameras are usually not hidden. Any thief worth their salt should be able to spot them and realize that they'd be captured on film (and later in person by police) if they tried steal from a business equipped with such cameras. Stealing from a business that MAKES them takes a special kind of stupid.

Lock up your landmarks

from here and here (source article)

I actually don't know what kind of theft prevention measures you can use here. What are you going to do, chain it to a tree? Anyone with the capability to move a bridge also has the capability to eliminate any restraining mechanism you might employ like a lock or chain. This kind of threat is beyond traditional preventative measures, but detective measures like motion sensors or surveillance cameras might do the trick. The only issue is that who anticipates this kind of threat in the first place when they formulate their threat model?

Deterrence Fail

found on Reddit

There's always someone who doesn't find the stated consequence enough of a deterrent. Clearly, if Mariah is in your theat model you're going to have to rethink the kinds of punishments you threaten her with.
