Actually blocking cookies seems to create problems with a surprising number of sites, so using incognito mode or private browsing mode in other browsers to limit the lifetime of the cookies to as long as the browser window is open is the next best thing. Neither stop other forms of tracking, though.

Considering cookies are one of the technologies that allow you to be tracked online, maybe you should be a little more discerning about which sites you accept cookies from.

I mean, when you factor in the fact that Google is an ad company, their desperation to keep tracking people makes sense, but it's still desperation, and each year they drag out the end of tracking further just looks more and more desperate.

I wonder whose bright idea it was to ruin the good reputation of cookies by using it as the name for a technology that would ultimately be used to track people online.

Admittedly there are some website features that can't work without a cookie, like keeping track of your online shopping cart, so you may not be able to do anything except view the content. But a lot of sites can't seem to be bothered working out those details and basically treat it as an all or nothing proposition; if you don't accept their cookies you get nothing, not even a read-only experience.
