A little TOO 'universal'

from here and here

A lot of things went wrong with Kias and Hyundais to allow them to be stolen as easily as they have been, but one that stands out to me is that there's a receptacle the same size as a USB plug that you can just plug a USB charging cable into and twist like a key to start the engine.

Monster Lock

from here and here (image source)

Is it harder to pick? Sure, just a 6 pin locks are harder than 5, a (guessing) 20 pin lock will be even harder to pick. Not just because there are so many more pins but also because you're going to need to build custom tools to reach all the way down that keyway. The same is true if you want to rake it or bump it or impression it - off the shelf tools aren't going to be good enough for this lock. Lockpicking Lawyer may have a footlong rake but I doubt anyone else does.

At least they won't be good enough if you're going for non-destructive entry. Standard bolt cutters will still do the trick.

Key size also matters in cybersecurity. Don't want no short, short encryption keys.

Never underestimate your adversaries

Watch on YouTube

You wouldn't leave the key in the lock if you were locking up a person, so why do so when you're locking up a cat?

Encrypting an encryption key

from here and here (image source)

Whether you lock or encrypt a key, you'll need a key to unlock or decrypt it, so how do you protect that secondary key? You either get into an infinite loop of keys and locks/encryption or you accept that a less secure key unlocks the thing you're ultimately trying to protect.

In the case above, however, you could just break the glass, which is exactly the kind of backdoor authorities would love to see in encryption, but which would make us all less secure, just as this key is less secure because of the glass.

When your elevator needs a decryption key

found on Reddit

It may just be simple substitution, but clearly it's effective enough at hiding the meaning that a key needs to be provided to allow passengers to reverse it.

American Lock-ic

found on Acid Cow

You can't convince me this isn't art. It may not be a painting but it sure does remind me of American Gothic

Now anyone can come from the land down under

from here and here

I'm sure I've dated myself with that title, but as badly as the person who thought a 4 digit encryption key was strong enough. They were clearly from far, far in the past.

A Key Is A Metal Password sticker

Product Page

While it's not strictly true (a key is more of a token than a password), they are both authenticators, and there's actually not that much difference between them. After all, if you write down your password on a slip of paper and then forget it, it becomes something you have rather than something you know. Likewise, if you memorize the bitting on a key, then with the right tools you could push the pins in a lock up the right amount from memory.

Sleepy Security

from here (image source)

This mix-up has all the trappings of someone not being entirely awake. If your threat model only includes people who are equally sleepy, maybe this would work, but that's not very likely.

Go Go Gadget Fingernails

from here and here (image source)

In terms of authentication, keys have traditionally represented tokens or "something you know", while body parts are usually consider to fall under the heading of "something you are" such as biometrics, but what happens when you combine the two? If it's attached to you is it really still just something you have? And biometrics aren't strictly about your biological components. If you have a prosthetic nose, do you think face recognition isn't going to use it? Of course it will.

Those other locks didn't mean anything me

found on Dump A Day

Treat your locks right. Don't abuse them or misuse them or they won't keep you as secure as they could.

High 'Security'

from here (image source)

According to the source, this oddity remained like this for at least 7 years, so I guess it really was secure because clearly no one had a ladder to retrieve those other keys.

But still technically correct

from here (image source)

Apparently there are special keys (control keys) designed to do just this, but I'm not sure this was supposed to be such a key. If this had been the expected result then there wouldn't be much point in taking the photo.

It's too short

from here and here (image source)

If I had a 10 foot key I might be able to unlock that door, but nothing shorter will do.

Keyless entry into the secured area

from here (image source)

I mean, if they'll confiscate a belt buckle shaped like a ray gun, or a coin-sized toy gun off of a sock monkey, they'll confiscate just about anything gun shaped. Better not make finger guns in their general vicinity.
