Sometimes the obvious countermeasures are the easiest ones to forget

found on Reddit

Stay out of the water, stay out of the bad part of town, stay out of untrustworthy websites, etc. If you always remember those sorts of obvious things, good for you, but plenty of people need reminders, and some never knew in the first place. So don't just remember for your own sake, remember to share those steps with others as well.

Which is the real one?

from here and here (image source)

Presumably one of those doors is an actual entrance and the rest are just decoys, but you'll have to figure out which is which before you can try breaking in.

Face Rec can get rekt

found on eBaum's World

I think anyone who sees this image captured by a face recognition system (assuming the system can even capture this as a face) is going to assume the system is on the fritz.

Stab Out The Eyes Of The State phone case

It's certainly an interesting message. Here's a free tip, though: Don't carry this while you're actually out doing what it says on the case.

Face Recognition Foiling Pants

Product Page

The Manifesto Collection contains a number of different articles of clothing, such as shirts and sweaters, and while I could certainly see foiling face rec with those by simply pulling the fabric up over your face, I don't think you can hike the pants up that high, so if these work it's not be cheating, it's by actually confusing the AI doing the classification.

The Manifesto Collection is apparently high fashion, however, with prices to match.

Ad blocker blocking

from here and here

Don't let your guard down just because a site feels entitled to put garbage in your browser. It's your computer, you decide what content goes on it and what doesn't, and if they block your ad blocker, take your browsing elsewhere. You don't need them or the risks they're trying to force on you.

Give a face recognition system nightmares

from here and here (image source)

Right now PPE is doing a fine job of covering up most of my facial features when I go outside, but the pandemic won't last forever (hopefully), so I'm definitely considering this as an alternative. It's either this or go around looking like a bank robber.

Anti Facial Recognition mask

Product Page

I couldn't find any research about this specific pattern to suggest it does more than any other mask to foil face recognition, but face masks in general do significantly lower the confidence of a match, and if you pair this with a pair of dark sunglasses you should be good to go even if it's a dud. On the other hand, the pattern could also serve as a conversation starter so you could help others start thinking critically about whether they want to be surveilled by facial recognition systems.

Add this the the long list of destructive ways to stop the bad guys from getting your data. Too bad they stop you from using it at the same time.

Nobody here but us branches

found on eBaum's World

Camouflage is a countermeasure that works both for defense and attack. Predators can't find you and prey don't see you until it's too late and they've walked right into your ambush.

Forage on the enemy

found on Acid Cow

The criminals thought if they had a car faster than the police cars then they would be able to get away, but now that car is a cop car and Texas criminals will be even less likely to get away now that their own strategy is being used against them.

The last thing a drone sees on the battlefield

found on Izismile

I wonder how it works. I imagine it's sending some kind of energy but is it frying the drone's electronics or just interfering with the control signal so that the drone operator can no longer tell it where to go?

Found my hat for the surveillance state

found on Izismile

If the Sand People in Star Wars had northern cousins, I'm sure this is what they'd wear, and honestly I can't say I'd blame them. It looks like it will protect you from the cold AND from identification.

Countermeasure Win

Watch on YouTube

This is why attackers have to be careful not to bite off more than they can chew. Their targets may have countermeasures that are surprisingly effective.

Now you too can defeat porch pirates with magic. Not Harry Potter magic, mind you, more like David Copperfield. Practical stage magic.

If only attribution was always this easy (and satisfying)

Watch on YouTube

Attackers do sometimes leave themselves open to counter-attack, but not nearly often enough, and usually not in nearly as satisfying a way as this. That thief has learned a very painful lesson.

Countermeasures that are outside the box

found on Reddit

It's certainly an unusual approach to sexual harassment. I wonder how good an idea it is in our worsening anti-LGBT+ environment, though. It might backfire so maybe don't try this at home?

That's one way to fight biometric surveillance

from here and here (image source)

So would you be willing to turn yourself into a human potato head* if it meant you could foil automated surveillance systems?

(*What else would you call it with all those eyes?)
