True story. It wasn't even my job, but when you're one of the few people able to help it kinda becomes your responsibility. I did try to get my employer to donate to the maintainer of the service that identified which decryptor to use, but I never thought to ask for a raise or bonus for myself. Apparently some people think that was a missed opportunity.

There is a third option, however - hope and wait. Hope is not a great strategy for data recovery and you'd certainly not want to rely on it, but sometimes all it takes is time for a decryption tool to be developed.

I didn't know this (because I don't play the game myself) but the game Runescape has a game mechanic known as a bank where you can store in-game items, and each player's bank can be protected by a PIN which can either be a 4-digit code that you choose, or a 6-digit one-time-passcode returned from an authenticator app for the game. Essentially, the game has a sort of 2-factor authentication.

Yes, there really is a dating site that caters exclusively to attractive people, and yes, they really did suffer a data breach in which over a million users' details were leaked.

True story, this actually happened last Friday. Unfortunately this wasn't before she gave them remote access to her system with TeamViewer (so I still have to rebuild the system). Still, the fact that she didn't give them administrative access and scared them away this way when they asked if there was anyone else who could give them the access they were looking for is a victory and I'll take it.
