It's been said that locks merely keep honest people honest, but I disagree. Most people wouldn't have the first clue how to pick, bump, or otherwise bypass a lock. It's not stopping them because they're honest, it's stopping them because they don't know how to overcome it. 

Everyone knows how to go around and obstacle, however. This is what keeping honest people honest really looks like.

Seems Compliant

So long as you've got the approved access controls in place, you're all good. Who cares if the controls are effective, that's not what compliance measures. It doesn't matter that anyone who can navigate stairs can also navigate around this obstacle.

Not only is it easy to tell what numbers are in the code, the order seems like it should be easy to guess as well. I feel confident that it's 1709 - it can be entered in a relatively fluid motion that saves time and effort. You might think that the door code should be changed on a more regular basis, but that would invite people to write it down and that that slip of paper could get lost or stolen and compromise the security. Instead the keypad should be better maintained and replaced when wear patterns start to give away the code.

The only reason you'd want to lock up your ice cream is if someone you live with, someone who shares physical access to your freezer, was eating it and you didn't want them to. This isn't going to stop them. It's only going to upset them and that's not good when you're living with them. I would think twice before employing this technique if I were you.

The anti-theft devices applied here are definitely not going to stop a thief of any calibre. It appears that there are instructions for cutting through wire (like the kind used by the anti-theft devices) right on the packaging of these pliers. You could probably swipe one of thees pliers with one hand tied behind your back.

It seems the incentives relating to getting security/privacy right in this bathroom are as misaligned as the sliding bolt hardware.

I don't know about you but I would still hop the banister if I wanted to get through. I'd give it a good shake first, mind you, but the threat of falling down the stairs isn't enough to deter me.

NPCs won't stand a chance

What about the people who follow the paved path, you say? They would still need to turn in order to operate and enter the door. This would literally only stop the people who have to come at the door head on and can't avoid this very narrow barrier

This mix-up has all the trappings of someone not being entirely awake. If your threat model only includes people who are equally sleepy, maybe this would work, but that's not very likely.

A car is not a dog. Securing it like it is one isn't going to work very well against the kinds of threats cars actually face.

You might be thinking this also stops people concerned about dirtying up the underside of their car, but if that was the only problem the driver could get out, go around and find the mechanism to open the gate. This literally only works against people who can't cross the grass.

Pretty sure that lock could just fall off if you turned the handle bars the right way.

Of course, even if you were somehow able to solve the problem demonstrated above, a screwdriver will take the entire mechanism off the door. I'm really not sure what the intended application of this lockable sliding latch is supposed to be, but for the life of me I can't see a way to make it actually be secure.

You might be like the person who put up this sign and fence and think that the sidewalk there is for people to walk on, but in reality it's only purpose is to keep people off the grass. Take that away and people will be wearing paths in the sod in no time at all. If you don't want people going through the area then you're going to have to fence off more than just the sidewalk.

That seems like a really good way to prevent the theft of your bumper, but it's not going to stop anyone from driving away in your car.

It almost seems as though this person was only thinking in 2 dimensions and never even considered a 3rd. Not only are they not thinking outside the box, they aren't even thinking outside a square. 

You're not going to get very far in your defenses if you can't see all dimensions of the threat landscape.

High 'Security'

According to the source, this oddity remained like this for at least 7 years, so I guess it really was secure because clearly no one had a ladder to retrieve those other keys.
