Something that we must all keep in mind is that there is no protective measure that is perfect. They all fail under the right (wrong) circumstances.

I'm not sure what else he could be protecting his ears from, to be perfectly honest. And even then, he buys up all the land around him for privacy, so it wouldn't just be the ambient cries of his victims off in the distance but rather ones he's actively pursuing, which is kind of a scary thought where this Lord Of The Flies reject is concerned.

I'm sure the argument could be made that covering that spot would have provided better protection, but it also would have blocked the camera. Protection doesn't exist in a vacuum. If it prevents legitimate use then that's just another way in which it can be imperfect.

I've seen cars chained to posts as though they were bikes, and I've seen cars padlocked as though they were gates, but this might be the first time I've seen cars 'protected' as though they were phones.

While there is room for both physical security and logical security when protecting your data, this isn't how it's accomplished. If anything, this is going to make it harder to stop a remote attack because you'll no longer be able to see what's going on or effectively issue commands to thwart the attack. It won't do much against a physical attack either because they can just take the hard drive.

The actual details may have been quite a bit more restrictive than the image caption lets on, making the accomplishment significantly less impressive than what's been implied, but being able to withstand the attacks that were allowed was still pretty impressive.

I guess people will know better than to ask to remain anonymous when speaking with this paper in the future. This person probably wouldn't have shared their views if they knew their identity wasn't going to be protected. I wonder what kind of unwanted outcomes that lead to.

Being able to accurately identify threats is a key part in protecting yourself from those threats. If you can't identify them then you're not going to be able to protect yourself or others, no matter how violently hyper-vigilant you are.

This makes you wonder about just how smart spiders are that they can develop work animals out of another species for the purposes of protecting what the spider values most - not entirely unlike what we did with wolves eons ago. If given enough time, would the spiders domesticate the frogs? 

How not to protect your identity

It's bad enough not wearing a mask (in a pandemic, no less) to an event such as that, but to walk around with your identity printed on a card hanging around your neck? You might as well just have a sticker on your shirt that says "Hi, my name is _________". No doubt while the authorities were struggling to put a name to a face for most of the other perpetrators, in this guy's case all they had to do was read.

This is the perfect time to develop and test biometric surveillance busting tech, and to make it become mainstream. You might want to do something about creating a fabric-based seal around the bottom, though.

Someone is going to have to find somewhere else to dig. Either that or they're going to have to figure out how to remove those toothpicks (which is not unimaginable).

Picking the right deterrent depends an awful lot on knowing your adversary. I suppose time will tell whether this cat's owner really knows their cat.

The old ways weren't necessarily all bad, they were just applied in bad ways. Seeing people lock up cars the way you'd lock up a bicycle shows that the same is true even today.

This seems like a much better way to apply the chastity belt mechanism than in an actual chastity belt. I've seen some of the other devices meant to protect your drink and frankly I think this one wins as far as security goes. Just needs a bit of polishing to make it look nicer.

I understand why people might want to cosplay as Bubble Boy, but there are holes for your hands to go through and the zipper isn't completely shut, and even if it was, it's not designed to keep out microscopic pathogens. Still, a little protection may be better than no protection at all (at least as long as you realize the limitations and aren't lulled into a false sense of security). Maybe this will reduce his chances of coming down with something.
