No one is above the law

found on eBaum's World

It's not just the law. Rules exist for a reason and they're supposed to apply to everyone, but there's always someone who thinks they're too good to follow those rules and they wind up demonstrating the principle of FAFO at some point or another.

Never underestimate your adversary

found on Animal Comedy

Don't worry about these two jail birds. There will be plenty to eat where they're going. Just make sure you make it harder for them to get back in because they were released.

Did it for the lulz

from here and here

Generally speaking, when criminals don't want to get caught they try their best to not get noticed. These guys took a completely different path and got a completely predictable (and arguably well deserved, considering the swatting involved) outcome.

Forage on the enemy

found on Acid Cow

The criminals thought if they had a car faster than the police cars then they would be able to get away, but now that car is a cop car and Texas criminals will be even less likely to get away now that their own strategy is being used against them.

Because that worked out so well in the movie

found on eBaum's World

What the Oakland Police want is a way to kill people without putting their officers in even the slightest bit of danger. They want the big bucks for their dangerous job, without the danger part. Unfortunately this really doesn't eliminate the danger, it merely transforms it.

You see, there's only 2 ways this armed robot could work - either it's autonomous (sort of like the Terminator in the movie was) and can direct itself and decide who to shoot, or it's remote controlled by a human operator (which would probably be more likely). Either of these options would be dangerous. The autonomous one could decide wrong and shoot it's handlers or innocent bystanders. Meanwhile the remote controlled one could be hacked and used against it's handlers or innocent bystanders.

It does make for an easier getaway

from here and here (source article)

It's either some very brave/brazen thieves, or it's an indictment on the quality of police work the local police force is capable of.  If they're so bad at their jobs that thieves don't fear getting caught then it's no wonder they do this.

Surveillance with a smile

from here and here

So both Tim Hortons and the RCMP have been spying on people. I'm starting to wonder about my home and native land. Is everything spying on me? Are even those damn geese spying on me?

I suppose technically neither Tim Hortons nor the Royal Canadian Malware Purveyors are actually spying on me because I don't have a mobile phone for them to attack (and people question my decision to forgo cell phone ownership).

All capybaras are what now?

found on Memedroid

I can sort of see putting a cat in a police K9 outfit - even though they're not dogs, they have at least been know to attack. But a capybara? I have never of a capybara that wasn't way too chill to attack.

Living In The United States Of Amazon

from here and here

Apparently Jeff Bezos makes the rules now, and he's decided to imbue his own employees with the powers normally held only by judges who grant search warrants. Something about private sector judges seems deeply unsettling.

Where do the crooks sit?

from here and here (image source)

These chibi cop cars are too cute to take seriously. This is like the cop car version of a couple of kids standing on each others shoulders under a rain coat trying to pretend to be an adult. The problem (besides the obvious logistics problem) is that this undermines the respect that we're supposed to have for authority figures.

As if smoking wasn't dangerous enough

from here and here (image source)

It's weird that our society is so fascinated with things shaped like guns when the people who actually have guns react so poorly to them.

The last place you should go

from here and here

I can't imagine what this person was thinking when they broke into a police station, but at least the cops didn't have to look too hard to find them.

If you think this is unfair, then I can only guess that you've never met a crypto bro in real life.

Termination gives you more time to chase that Snorlax

from here and here

You're supposed to be able to rely on authorities to serve, protect, and just generally do the right thing. That's kind of their job. If they want to play video games all day, they should get a job doing that - and who knows, maybe they will now that they're not stuck in a patrol car anymore.

How not to get away with something

from here and here

This guy who stole his brother's identity only to find out his brother was wanted by the cops is going to have a very interesting family reunion one day.

These are our users, get your own

from here and here

You've got to figure that when Facebook tries to defend users against spying by cops it isn't for the benefit of the users. They spy on those same users, so it's no principled endeavor. In all likelihood they're just trying to stop less capable spies from scaring the users away from the platform.

Not the kind of heat they were looking for

from here and here

People are wondering what this Winnipeg couple were doing trying to steal a furnace in the first place. On the one hand there's the resale value, but on the other hand it's "Winter-peg", one of the coldest cities in the world - they might have just been trying to keep warm.

So much for serving and protecting

from here

It's not just that they let this one bad apple into the police, it's that if this is the the standard of care that was taken when vetting police officers, how many more bad apples are there in there?

If you say you don't trust the police, well I can't say that I'd blame you. Under the circumstances it's hard to imagine anyone trust them.

Rub to unlock

from here

I mean, they can't give you privacy while you unlock the phone because you might delete important evidence, so can they force you to expose yourself or worse in order to collect evidence? I suppose we'll have to wait for the tech to test this question.

I hope "rub" is sufficiently gender neutral that this idea can cover everyone.

I'm sure that cuts down the protest(er)s

found on Acid Cow

When authorities known for abusing their power start riding around in vehicles surrounded by spinning blades, it's time to get the heck out of there.
