I kinda think that if neither malware nor hardware destroying circuitry will stop users from plugging strange USB devices into their computers, explosive charges probably won't stop them either. But I'd certainly love to be proven wrong.

I'm surprised people still make this mistake, but you should absolutely not joke with the airport security about bombs or hijacking. You aren't going to like it when they put you in jail. I don't care how funny you think you are, or even how funny you actually are, they won't be laughing.

While jokes about weapons of ass destruction write themselves, the news story about the man who "slipped and fell" on a WWII mortar makes it clear that the doctors were not in a joking mood. As funny as it seems to us as readers, they had to consider the possibility that it was live ammunition and posed a real threat to everyone there. Even fake weapons need to be treated with care and respect because you never know how the circumstances might change.

Imagine the kind of statement this makes. Not only did the allied forces go to the trouble of producing a fake wooden bomb, they used real fuel to fly over and deliver it to it's target. They were so well informed about what the enemy was up to and so well prepared that they could afford to troll the enemy in such a demoralizing way. I bet this made the Germans think twice about using this tactic again.

With their 95% failure rate, I suspect confiscating water bottles at TSA checkpoints does more to drive the sale of bottled water in the shops beyond the checkpoints than it does to stop terrorism. I wonder if anyone has looked for a money trail there.
