Worst Wifi Password Ever
Watch on YouTube
Tricky passwords can be a double-edged sword. You have to make sure they aren't more trouble than they're worth.

Never tempt fate or hackers

You might think that the only way they could get into your WiFi is by guessing your super powerful secret password, but not only is your password probably not as strong as you think it is, it's also probably not the only way in. WiFi routers have vulnerabilities just like other computerized systems.

The P in IoT stands for privacy

I'm glad to hear that people aren't bothering to connect their smart appliances to the Internet. Good for them. Maybe the spy-appliance companies will take the hint and get out of the consumer surveillance game. People just want to wash their clothes and cool their food, they don't need devices that spy on you in your own home.

At least it's not 123456. Not that the extra 2 digits add much security but still, it could be worse.

As a general rule it's best not to make a target out of yourself. Remember that the nail that sticks out gets hammered down.

That's when you need a VPN

VPNs are supposed to protect your traffic from prying eyes, but since most sites are encrypted these days your traffic is generally already protected without a VPN. That doesn't mean you should let your guard down when faced with the creepiest free WiFi.

I'm not sure what they're protecting by leaving the password stuck to the wall like that, but at least it's not 123456.

Your buttprint is your password

People keep telling us how secure biometrics are, but what's even more secure than biometrics? Weird biometrics! My password is a body part but you don't know which part.

Not exactly covert

Now I'm not spy, but I'm pretty sure that when you're spying you're not supposed to advertise what what you're doing so the whole world can see.
Or maybe that's exactly what spies should be doing so that they're transparent and we can have an open discussion about what they're doing. But I think it's unlikely that any such operation would survive public scrutiny

When children figure out replay attacks

In the past the mom might have suggested leaving today's newspaper on the counter, but I guess print newspapers are a thing of the past. It would have been better than leaving out crackers or other items in specified locations, though. I'm pretty sure there are a limited number of combinations of that before she starts repeating herself, and I suspect she's going to need to motivate those kids for years.

I mean, it's not actually a very good password if it's on a big sign as you drive into town, but other than that, some of them look like they might be long enough to be pretty good.

Apparently billions of devices are vulnerable to a series of wifi vulnerabilities, and if you thought bitcoin consumed a lot of energy, just imagine how much would be used applying updates to billions of devices.

Everyone can be compromised. No one has perfect security, so it's probably not going to end well if you go around antagonizing the people who find and exploit security weaknesses.

Although the punch-line wasn't exactly a surprise (wifi passwords are fertile ground for jokes), the execution of this gag was still quite good.

Just because it's out in the open doesn't mean it's going to be easy

First off, you definitely want to change the WiFi password from the default, and while it certainly is convenient to have it attached to the router, there are still ways you could make it difficult for someone to read it without your help. Of course, for some people, their own handwriting is security enough.

WiFi Security: PostIt Note Edition
![]() |

On the one hand old-timers like me are going to question the wisdom of writing the WiFi password on the router (like attaching password PostIt notes to your computer monitor), but on the other hand if the password is unreadable it probably doesn't matter where it's written.

Maybe if they not only have to read it but type it in it will actually stick and get followed.
