I couldn't find any research about this specific pattern to suggest it does more than any other mask to foil face recognition, but face masks in general do significantly lower the confidence of a match, and if you pair this with a pair of dark sunglasses you should be good to go even if it's a dud. On the other hand, the pattern could also serve as a conversation starter so you could help others start thinking critically about whether they want to be surveilled by facial recognition systems.

I suppose if you pull a Kevin McCallister (Home Alone) while wearing this thing you'll probably wind up with an OK password, but everyone around you will be able to see what it was. It makes shoulder surfing much easier.

I don't actually have high hopes that anyone will be able to come up with face recognition that can identify you through a mask (heck, that much coverage could foil even human-based face recognition), but if anyone could do it, I suspect it would be Apple.

I've seen this face recognition countermeasure done with make-up before, but who among us is a talented enough make-up artist to attempt that? Not many, would be my guess. Well, talent is no longer required. There's a variety of different faces available.

You might be wondering what computer virus is airborne, but in the age of wifi the real question is what computer virus isn't airborne. What I'm sure you can't see is that the mask has a wire mesh on the inside meant to block signals to and from his wireless antenna.

Probably not the kind of mask if you're trying to socially engineer someone in person, or maybe it is. Most people probably don't even know what phishing is, so one might reasonably assume the mask won't give away your intentions.

And for those who do know what it means, you could just tell them you're trying to raise awareness of a cyber-security threat everyone faces. You know, like I am right now.

This meme just keeps evolving. I've seen photos of people wearing an actual antivirus CD as a mask. I've seen cartoon versions of those photos. I've seen those cartoons printed on masks and shirts and mugs, and now we have a face mask that looks like an antivirus CD.

Subverting face recognition surveillance by giving everyone the same face is an interesting idea, and you should definitely check it out. If you don't have the funds for one of these prostheses they also have paper-craft versions that much more budget-friendly.
