Authorized Pets Only

found on Reddit

Having seen how difficult face recognition can be in humans, I don't have a lot of faith in this application either. Among all the other problems, have fun enrolling your pets when they're soaking wet, because that's what they're going to look like when they want in in a hurry.

Maybe it's just the work you had done

found on Dump A Day

I can't imagine facial recognition is going to handle facial modification all that well. If you get cosmetic surgery, be prepared to re-enroll.

You can't just pay lip service to data protection

from here and here

Clearview AI, the biometric surveillance company everyone loves to hate because they add you to their system without your consent, is apparently ignoring French regulators trying to call it to heel over violations of the European Union's GDPR. While they haven't paid the fines yet, they're now going to be growing by the day, and the EU has already thrown out existing data transfer arrangements with the US over GDPR violations (like the Cambridge Analytica scandal) in the past.

Can't be shy if you want to fly

from here and here

I hope you all don't mind biometric surveillance creeping slowly but steadily into your everyday lives, because it sounds like the creeps at the TSA have definitely settled on the creeping strategy.

Face Rec can get rekt

found on eBaum's World

I think anyone who sees this image captured by a face recognition system (assuming the system can even capture this as a face) is going to assume the system is on the fritz.

Face Recognition Foiling Pants

Product Page

The Manifesto Collection contains a number of different articles of clothing, such as shirts and sweaters, and while I could certainly see foiling face rec with those by simply pulling the fabric up over your face, I don't think you can hike the pants up that high, so if these work it's not be cheating, it's by actually confusing the AI doing the classification.

The Manifesto Collection is apparently high fashion, however, with prices to match.

Give a face recognition system nightmares

from here and here (image source)

Right now PPE is doing a fine job of covering up most of my facial features when I go outside, but the pandemic won't last forever (hopefully), so I'm definitely considering this as an alternative. It's either this or go around looking like a bank robber.

Anti Facial Recognition mask

Product Page

I couldn't find any research about this specific pattern to suggest it does more than any other mask to foil face recognition, but face masks in general do significantly lower the confidence of a match, and if you pair this with a pair of dark sunglasses you should be good to go even if it's a dud. On the other hand, the pattern could also serve as a conversation starter so you could help others start thinking critically about whether they want to be surveilled by facial recognition systems.

A face recognition pushmi-pullyu

from here and here (image source)

It may be terrible taste, but it actually looks like pretty good execution. I can definitely see face rec systems falling for it. Now the question is, does that resemble his actual face or is he going to try and pull a fast one.

That's one way to fight biometric surveillance

from here and here (image source)

So would you be willing to turn yourself into a human potato head* if it meant you could foil automated surveillance systems?

(*What else would you call it with all those eyes?)

Not sure about that beard, though

found on Reddit

A little bit of weight gain isn't going to change the contours of your face much, but growing a beard is certainly going to obscure what was there before.

The Old Switcheroo

from here and here

If it sounds like Mark Zuckerberg is pulling a fast one by claiming Facebook won't use face recognition anymore but under their new name they will continue to use it, then you are not alone. It seems a bit like a bait and switch scam.

Anti-Face-Recognition-Surveillance shirt

Product Page

It appears that this pattern is a highly modified version of Hyperface (which is apparently not for sale anywhere). I have no idea if it's still effective after all the modifications, but if it makes surveillance cameras freak out then I'm all for it.

It often works against technology too

from here and here (image source)

When you think about how easy it is to fool people and you realize the technology isn't as good as people then face recognition technology loses that thin veneer of magical security security dust and you start to have more realistic expectations of it.

Last century called and they want their vuln back

from here

I kid you not, I was holding up photos in front of face recognition cameras 20 years ago, and I'm pretty sure I wasn't the first person to think of it. This recent finding may have a novel way of presenting the captured image to the system, but it's still just feeding a captured image to the system. Since the only real tricky bit was the fact that the system required an infrared image, I suspect a photo printed with infrared ink might have done the trick without needing to rely on any camera funny-business.

20 years and face rec is still being bypassed in fundamentally the same way. Is it any wonder I have no faith in biometrics?

Can't wait for Apple's face mask ID technology

found on Reddit

I don't actually have high hopes that anyone will be able to come up with face recognition that can identify you through a mask (heck, that much coverage could foil even human-based face recognition), but if anyone could do it, I suspect it would be Apple.

Double Vision Anti-Surveillance Realistic Face Mask

Product Page

I've seen this face recognition countermeasure done with make-up before, but who among us is a talented enough make-up artist to attempt that? Not many, would be my guess. Well, talent is no longer required. There's a variety of different faces available.

A little fuzzy on the details

from here (image source)

This is almost enough to make me wish I didn't shave my head. Almost. I would love to have a built-in face covering like this to foil face recognition, but the best I've got is an elbow I can stick my face in and pretend I'm a vampire or something. I guess as long as the pandemic is on I can still wear the face mask.

How to make face recognition "work" with masks

found on Ebaum's World

I like to think this might actually fool facial recognition systems. Not to the extent that they'll think you're the Tiger King or anything, but at least enough to think they see a face, and if it's not your real face then all the better.
