Taking Pwn2Own on the road

from here and here

Hacking a car through it's headlights is certainly a novel approach to automotive theft. Learning that the same thing could also be accomplished in other areas (even punching a hole in the side and grabbing wires inside) make it clear that this is going to take some doing to fix.

Is it also electrified?

found on Acid Cow

It kinda reminds me of an electric fence. I'm sure it wouldn't be practical to try and electrify just the wire when it's in contact with the undercarriage of the car, which is also metal and therefore conductive. Maybe instead of a constant current there could be a trigger system that fires when you try to tamper with it and then gives a shock like a cattle prod.

Thieves exploiting major vulnerability to steal Dodge Ram trucks

This news report makes an excellent point. Vehicles are now computers on wheels, and need the same kind of effort to protect that more traditional computers do. Something to keep in mind when you're choosing your next vehicle.

How to unlock a car with tape

Watch on YouTube

I've never tried this exact method, however I do recall being able to widen an existing opening with my bare hands so it seems plausible. That was a long time ago, though, and apparently this may be a little more damaging with modern motorized windows. Your mileage may vary.

Forage on the enemy

found on Acid Cow

The criminals thought if they had a car faster than the police cars then they would be able to get away, but now that car is a cop car and Texas criminals will be even less likely to get away now that their own strategy is being used against them.

Steve Mould : I Hacked Into My Own Car

Watch on YouTube

I think one of the really interesting things about this video is that it shows someone taking a basic principle like the replay attack and figuring out how to make it work in the real world. It didn't work at first, and he went through a number of attempts and refinements before it finally did. This is an essential skill because you can't always just follow someone else's instructions, especially when you're dealing with something new and there are no instructions to follow yet.

Gee, that's not suspicious at all

from here and here (image source)

That clearly looks like someone tried to force the trunk open at some point, and given the lock is on it when the picture was taken it stands to reason there was something or someone in there at the time. What do you do when you see something like that? Call the police?

It does make for an easier getaway

from here and here (source article)

It's either some very brave/brazen thieves, or it's an indictment on the quality of police work the local police force is capable of.  If they're so bad at their jobs that thieves don't fear getting caught then it's no wonder they do this.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure the older generation knows how to drive stick.

You wouldn't DoS a car

from here and here (image source)

Sometimes whether a thing is an attack or a defense depends entirely on perspective. The motorcyclist could be trying to prevent his motorcycle from getting stolen, but the car owner can't go anywhere now because the motorcycle is anchoring him in place. You could make a lot of arguments about the motorcyclist knowing better, but this site has seen cars chained up as if they were bicycles, so I don't doubt this could have been a sincere attempt to prevent theft (even if it is ridiculous).

Hope that's not your only defense

While that might stop me, I suspect that not only are there plenty of millennials who can drive stick there are also plenty of older people who steal vehicles.

Your mileage may vary

from here (image source)

I've seen cars chained to posts as though they were bikes, and I've seen cars padlocked as though they were gates, but this might be the first time I've seen cars 'protected' as though they were phones.

Car thieves hate this one weird trick

Watch on YouTube

So let's say you've stuck an AirTag on a car that you want to steal and you follow the signal to the owners home. What happens when you can't find the car, or even the garage? Well, I guess you're out the cost of an AirTag.

In reality, though, I suspect the driveway in place of a grassy yard is going to give away the car's location. It's still quite a well executed trick, though.

How to unlock a car with tape

Watch on YouTube

Unfortunately I really don't know if there's a countermeasure to mitigate this threat. I suspect there isn't. This is more just a reminder to not trust your car to protect your valuables. While what was demonstrated in the video was a form of non-destructive entry, destructive entry through the glass windows also works and always will, so there isn't much point in trying to stop the non-destructive approach - and frankly, if they use a non-destructive approach you're better off because there's less you'll need to replace that way.

Sit, stay, lock your doors

A car is not a dog. Securing it like it is one isn't going to work very well against the kinds of threats cars actually face.

Dude, where's my car?

from here (image source)

Obviously you can make out the car when you're up close to it like this, but when you're on the far end of the parking lot? That's when it starts to get more challenging.
