Anti Facial Recognition mask

Product Page

I couldn't find any research about this specific pattern to suggest it does more than any other mask to foil face recognition, but face masks in general do significantly lower the confidence of a match, and if you pair this with a pair of dark sunglasses you should be good to go even if it's a dud. On the other hand, the pattern could also serve as a conversation starter so you could help others start thinking critically about whether they want to be surveilled by facial recognition systems.

Worst Criminal Disguises

Watch on YouTube

Some of these crooks have been seen here before, but some of them are new. That produce bag mask idea was fresh.

Found my hat for the surveillance state

found on Izismile

If the Sand People in Star Wars had northern cousins, I'm sure this is what they'd wear, and honestly I can't say I'd blame them. It looks like it will protect you from the cold AND from identification.

******** Mask

from here and here (image source)

I suppose if you pull a Kevin McCallister (Home Alone) while wearing this thing you'll probably wind up with an OK password, but everyone around you will be able to see what it was. It makes shoulder surfing much easier.

That's one way to deal with the surveillance state

At least he has the presence of mind to wear a mask. You know where there's one camera there's more, so if you attack one you'll probably be captured by another.

Outwitting the fuzz

from here and here (image source)

Is this your cat? How can you be sure one way or the other. I don't think I could identify this cat in a line-up. Too much of it's face is covered.

Just tell the authorities it's to block COVID19

found on Izismile

This is the perfect time to develop and test biometric surveillance busting tech, and to make it become mainstream. You might want to do something about creating a fabric-based seal around the bottom, though.

Though I couldn't find that image anywhere else, I did happen to stumble across a story that appears to be about the same technology.

Security so bad you'll see stars

from here

If you're counting on attackers being dumb enough to think cracking your password didn't work because it looks the same as when you're typing it into a password field, you're in for a rude awakening.

More than just sticky fingers

from here (source article)

Well, it's good to know at least one of these melon-heads has already been arrested. I'd hate to find out something as ridiculous as melon masks actually worked as a disguise.

Antivirus Face Mask mask

Product Page

I was excited to learn that one of those online t-shirt companies was branching out into face masks, so I hat to check it out. Then I found this, and it was just too meta to pass up. Unfortunately at the time of writing all the masks are out of stock, which is a shame, because I'm still using a cut up t-shirt.

Who was that masked man, anyway?

from here and here (image source)

It doesn't surprise me that face recognition systems can operate with less than complete faces, but if you keep obscuring more and more there comes a point at which the computers can no longer be said to be operating on facial data. I don't doubt that you can recognize someone by just their eyes (that's what iris recognition and retinal biometrics are all about) but I really don't think you can call it face recognition at that point. It's a different technology. A face recognition algorithm that tried to operate with that little data would be more appropriately called a face guessing algorithm because it would be guessing what the face looked like and then deriving the identity from that.

Deterrents: They're Grrrrrreat!

found on Izismile

Y'know, I don't blame the tigers. I think those masks would keep me away too. They're creepy.

Your face palm is your password

Let's see tech start-ups scrape that into their biometric databases.

Stay healthy, stay private

from here and here (image source)

It appears that there's a tiny bit of silver lining being discovered as a result of mandated face masks in China. That's something to learn from for sure.
