You've got to figure that when Facebook tries to defend users against spying by cops it isn't for the benefit of the users. They spy on those same users, so it's no principled endeavor. In all likelihood they're just trying to stop less capable spies from scaring the users away from the platform.

You've no doubt heard the saying before: If you're not paying then you're the product. Well, it seems as though Vizio thought that was too limiting and found a way to make you the product even when you do pay. They make twice as much from the data they collect from TVs as they do from selling the TVs in the first place. I kind of think that if they're making so much off the data they should be giving us something for free. Where's my slice of the pie?

I actually have zero difficulty imagining Mark Zuckerberg as a helicopter parent. Just look at how much his company spies on complete strangers. So the idea that Facebook wanted to target children around the same age as Zuckerberg's oldest makes it difficult not to see a possible connection between the two.

If my employer asked me to put a camera in my bedroom, they'd be looking for a new employee. I don't care if customer payment information is being handled by people at home, cameras in the bedroom is a deal breaker.

I always knew the government had it in them to gather evidence of criminal activity in spite of encrypted communications. They just had to put in the work instead of asking the tech industry for an Easy Button. Now that they've shown they can sell their own backdoored phones to criminals all over the world, read tens of millions of encrypted messages, and make nearly a thousand arrests (with more coming), they better realize they can't leverage their perceived helplessness in negotiations with tech companies any longer. Everyone knows what they're capable of and arguably their approach is better than anything the tech industry can do because it's much more targeted.

Even if you think My FBI Agent is a bit hyperbolic (it's unlikely we each get our own agent, but they have been known to spy on people through their webcams), there are still people out there willing to spy on just about anyone. It must suck to be them when their targets start dropping spoilers like that.
