So there's some novel malware afoot that can embed itself into UEFI. What exactly are we expecting ordinary Windows users to do about it? What can they do about it? Not much, honestly. Their best bet is to not run the installer, but the tools at their disposal to help them avoid that are the same tools they use to avoid launching other malware, so they're probably already doing everything they can, short of deploying an application allow-list (and hoping they don't add the malware to the allowed list).

Modern Windows systems will tell you this even when you're logged in as the administrator account. It's not enough to just be logged in as an administrator, you have to "run as administrator" too, because system designers would rather build systems that second guess the user than to teach the user how to follow the principle of least privilege.

While I realize it can be tough when all supported versions of Windows are affected, I would still expect Microsoft to move a little faster to deal with a zero-day that's actively being exploited.

I don't know whose idea it was to put ads in the operating system, but clearly it was a bad idea and they should be fired because of how obvious it should have been even without a concrete example of problems in the OS itself. Ads have been a pox on the web for decades and they just get more and more toxic. The people in charge of the OS should have noped right out of that meeting.

I mean, do we have to see malvertizing on the desktop before people clue in?

I'm not sure if this is still true, but it certainly seemed true at one point in time. If it's still true now after fixing vulnerabilities for years and years then it kind of makes you wonder what the point in fixing the vulnerabilities is.

And that's why I always answer "No" when asked if I want to send usage data or crash reports  or that sort of thing. If I want a vendor to have a piece of information for some reason, I will send it myself.

Now I realize Mono isn't the malware here. It's a legitimate platform that enables a certain degree cross platform functionality. You know what also allowed things to be cross platform? Java - and look how that turned out. Java is notorious for being a vector of attack.

Even without the never-ending stream of vulnerabilities that came with Java, the simple act of allowing executables from a highly targeted platform (Windows) run on one whose defensive ecosystem isn't nearly as well developed is just asking for trouble. Especially now that the cat is out of the bag.
